- Our goal is to have two captains each year, but we may have a larger number in any given year, to have the “appropriate leadership” necessary.
- At the end of each season, varsity players only vote for captains, including graduating seniors. Why varsity players only? Presumably, they are the most mature and have the most knowledge about who would be a good leader.
- From that vote, at least one captain will be chosen, based on majority votes. In addition, the coach reserves the right to choose one or more captains. Why? Because being a captain is not a popularity contest and leaders with different perspectives and backgrounds contribute positively to the team. Sometimes, the team needs help in seeing that.
- The vote is not blind, except to the rest of the team. Each player is expected to come to me, one on one, and give me a rationale for their choice. If there’s no rationale, then the vote doesn’t count. It’s good practice in making a decision and presenting a rationale.
